Ordering your satchel directly from our Workshop

There's basically a few things we need to know to start your satchel order, they are as follows.

1. Colour (or Colours and Colour Pattern)
2. Size
3. Customisations
4. Delivery Country
5. Optional: If required for an important date.

Choose your Size and Colour

Firstly, you need to work out what size satchel is going to best for you. We have 5 standard satchel sizes and over 30 different leathers you can choose from. If you're really not certain what leather you prefer then we can also send you swatches of our leathers so you can see them in real-life, but please bare in mind this will slow down the ordering process a little.

Our Price Tables

The prices of your satchel will vary depending upon the leather (or leathers) you choose to have your satchel crafted from. Below we have listed our current prices for 2013. You may notice we have recently increased them slightly because we haven't raised our prices in the last 3-years but due the increasing price of cow hides since 2009, which doesn't seem to be curtailing, then we have had to implement a small price increase.

When ordering direct from our workshop then you should only pay the Workshop Retail Price which doesn't include shipping or any taxes or duty. If you're shopping on the High-Street, especially outside the UK then you are likely to pay the Highstreet MRP because the store will have had to pay for shipping and possibly import duties on their satchels. Stores may offer you discounts on the Highstreet MRP at their own discretion.

Personalisation or Customisation

Once you've chosen your ideal size and the leather that you want your satchel crafting from then you need to decide if you would like your satchel customising. Customisation is the one of the main benefits to ordering direct from our workshop. Listed below are some of customisations our craftsmen regularly incorporate into our satchels...

• Would you like your satchel embossed with your Monogram? (View Some Examples)
  Monogramming is available in Silver-leaf, Gold-leaf or Blind. Upto six characters can be embossed, with or without abbreviated periods, in an uppercase Roman-serif style font at the cost of £5 per letter up to a maximum of £20 for four, five or six letters. If you'd like more letters, your full name or want us to emboss a design, symbol or logo on the satchel then we can emboss the satchel with a custom design. Prices for custom designs start at £30.

• What about the addition of a Briefcase Handle? (View Some Examples)
  Many people find it handy to have a briefcase handle added to the top of the satchel. The briefcase handle customisation is normally added to our 14", 15" and 15" Tallboy satchels. The cost of this customisation is £15, but please be aware that when the briefcase handle customisation is added then the top of the satchel becomes flat instead of smooth curve and therefore reduces the height of the satchel slightly, usually by about 1 to 2cm depending upon the size of the satchel - this can be clearly seen in the example photos.

  Normally when we fit a briefcase handle then it's accompanied by a detachable shoulder strap so that the satchel can be used as a briefcase. If you would prefer the satchel to have a fixed strap then please let us know when you order your satchel.

• Should we extend the shoulder strap for you?
  Our shoulder straps are 4' long (48") on our standard satchels, but people of taller and broader stature often find a longer shoulder strap useful or if you want to wear it across the body, not dropping off the shoulder as it's usually worn then a longer shoulder strap may be needed. It costs just £3 to extend the shoulder strap by 6", £6 for 12" and so on.

• Would you like the gusset depth altering? (View Some Examples)
  Our satchels are crafted with generous gusset depths, but many students find they have to carry an awfully large amount of books, as well as thier laptop and notebooks. Sometimes it's can be very useful to have an extra wide/deeper gusset. This effectively allows you to slide 'more books' in your satchel - not bigger books. For the fee of £12 you can change the gusset depth from the standard and specify the gusset depth you'd prefer; the smallest gusset starts at just 3cm (nice and slim if you just want to slide in a laptop or a few notepads) up to a maximum 42% of the satchel width. Our recommend deeper gusset measures a third of the satchels width, so a 15" satchel would have a deeper gusset measuring 5". If you don't specify a measurement for your deeper gusset then it will approximately measure one third (33%) of your satchels width.

• If it's going to be heavy, then you may need a shoulder strap pad! (View Some Examples)
  If you predict the contents of your satchel are going to be heavy then you may want to help spread the weight of the satchel on your shoulder by using a shoulder strap pad. For £8.50 we'll craft you a matching shoulder pad (or contrasting, if that's what you'd prefer!) The shoulder pad is removeable and slips over the shoulder strap. It is lined with suede to help cushion the downward force on your shoulder.

• Buckles are nice and secure but magnetic fasteners are quick and easy! (View Some Examples)
  The traditional satchel has always had double sided buckles to fasten it's flap. There's a art to opening them, and a regular satchel user knows just how to get thier satchel open in a couple of seconds. Buckles help as a deterant to thieves also! But no matter how good traditional buckles can be, sometimes they are just too slow for access. For £12 we can modify your satchel so it still looks like it has traditional buckles but it is actually fitted with discrete magnetic fasteners instead.

• Backpack Straps
  Backpack straps replace the shoulder strap and allow the satchel to be worn on the back. They're ideal for cyclists and smaller children who carry a lot of heavy books to school, but may not have the strength or stamina to carry them on just one shoulder. It costs just £6 to replace the shoulder straps with backpack straps.

• Multi-colour options
  If you can't choose one colour, or if your just feeling like starting a new fashion trend then we can cut various parts of the satchel from different coloured leather hides to suite your taste and style. We have 6 standard colour patterns that people can use to design their own different coloured designs using these patterns. They are as follows:-

  • 2P Two-Tone Design (Standard and Briefcase)
  • 2T Two-Tone Design (Standard and Briefcase)
  • 3C Two-Tone Design (Standard and Briefcase)
  • 3P Two-Tone Design (Standard and Briefcase)
  • 3T Two-Tone Design (Standard and Briefcase)
  • 3X Two-Tone Design (Standard and Briefcase)

  Each shade of grey can be specified as a different leather, so for instance on the colour pattern file called 2T you could have COL-1 as Charcoal Black and COL-2 as Pillarbox Red and you would end up with a bag looking like this;

  
  If you can't get the colour scheme you want using these six patterns then you have the option to just forget about the standard patterns completely and design anything you want using any number of colours, but for us to craft a satchel in a bespoke colour pattern like that costs a little more. There's an administrative charge for processing the custom colour design of £20 and then a charge for the number of leathers you use in the design, £10 for two colours/leathers, £15 for three, £18 for four and then £2 for each additional colour after that.

Timescales and Shipping

Once you've decided upon what you want then all you have to do is send us an email at orders@leathersatchel.co letting us know (1) Colour, (2) Size, (3) Customisations, (4) Shipping Destination and (5) Date Required. We'll then confirm your order by sending you an electronic invoice that you can pay securely using your credit or debit card, if you don't want to pay online using a credit card then we also accept payment by Bank Transfer or Cleared Cheque. Most invoices are sent within 24 hours, sometimes within a few hours it's during UK office hours but please allow upto 48 hours for us to check over your order and to send you the invoice for the custom satchel and a little longer at weekends.

Once your invoice is paid then your satchel will be scheduled for crafting and will then be hand-crafted by one of our leathersmiths. Once completed it will go through a quality control procedure and then it'll be wrapped and dispatched to your delivery address anywhere in the world. Our workshops are based in the UK and shipping to the mainland here is FREE (any UK Islands and Highlands cost an extra £6), Europe is just £10 and shipping to anywhere else costs £15 per satchel.

It's best to allow between 10-14 days for satchels ordered using our standard service but we will confirm dispatch dates with you when you order. If you need it faster -- say for an up-and-coming Birthday -- then we also have a priority service available. This allows you to get a custom satchel in faster than the normal 10-14 days, sometimes within just 48 hours!

More complicated satchel designs, such as fully custom sizes, or unusual customisations can take significantly longer and we like to allow 30 days for anything fully bespoke or any customisation that is not executed regulary.

Shipping for UK deliveries is carried out by a 24/48 hour courier, international deliveries are handled usually by DHL Air Express, unless you have another preference, like Royal Mail, but any untracked service carriers are only used at your discretion and at your own risk. When using DHL Air Express we have found that US and Central European deliveries take about 2-3 days to arrive, Eastern Europe, Asia takes about 4-5 days. Whilst other faraway lands, like Australasia and South America take around 5-7 days for delivery.
